How does the place where you live and work influence the way you see, think and create art? That question forms the central base of HIER, a group exhibition featuring twelve artists who are each connected in their own way to the city of Arnhem and its surroundings.  Some live or work there; others have studied there or, over the years, have forged a special bond with the city and the region. The landscape forms the central theme of this exhibition, but it’s not just about the Veluwe, the Rhine, the floodplains, the forests and the agricultural areas surrounding Arnhem. Buildings, industry, infrastructure and the history of a place also determine how an environment looks and is experienced. Then there are landscapes that cannot be immediately pinpointed: places that live on in our memories, that have since disappeared or that exist only in our imagination.

HIER brings together twelve diverse artistic practices, ranging from young creators to artists with a long track record. Each of the participating artists approaches the landscape from their own background, experiences and way of working. Sometimes the surroundings are immediately recognisable; at other times, they are only indirectly present. Painting, photography, video, sculpture and installations offer diverse perspectives on themes such as nature and ecology, architecture, technology, agriculture, light, memory, smell and identity.

With HIER, OMSTAND has deliberately chosen artists who know the city and its surroundings from inside out. But really, how familiar is that environment actualy? And what do artists see that others might overlook? HIER is ultimately not just about the place where we find ourselves, but above all about the question of how we live within and alongside our environment – and how that environment forms us.
